Situated west of Upington, this game park offers the visitor spectacular scenery.
Augrabies gets its name from a Khoi word meaning "The noisy one".
The game reserve of 15 415 hectares, around the falls, allows one to see a large selection of game. These would include animals such as black rhino, kudu, eland, springbok and giraffe.
The Orange River drops 191 meters at the Augrabies Falls. The thundering flow of water led the original Hottentot's residents who believed that evil spirits were active here, and so they named the waterfall Ankoerebis, from which the Trek Boers, who settled here later on, derived the name Augrabies.
Particularly in late summer, when the river carries a whole lot of water, the roaring waters fully justify that name. New waterfalls form in the summers at the sidewalls, and the air is filled with dense misting cloud.
The gorge at the Augrabies Falls is 240 m deep and 18 km long. It is a most notable example of granite erosion. When the whole land of the area lifted about 500 million years ago, the Orange River slowly started to plow its bed into the ground
The Augrabies Falls National Park, an hour from Upington, constitutes an area of 820 sq km and stretches along the Orange River. The vegetation is suited to the arid desert climate.
The Nama people, who are accostmed to the harsh climate here, inhabit the area. They have mat house, which are very good for the scorching heat.
The Kokerboom, or Quiver Tree grows here. They are vascular plants and can store huge amounts of water in their stems and so survive long periods of drought. The park contains a game reserve with rhinos as the main attraction. The 28 000 hectares on both the northern and southern sides of the Orange River provide sanctuary to a variety of species, from the very smallest vascular plants, birds and reptiles to springbok, gemsbok and the endangered black rhino.
The Giraffes of Augrabies are light in color, because of the extreme heat. Preadators in Augrabies are the Leapord, Jackals, African Wild Cats and Caracals.
The summers are hot and nights cold during that time. Winters are quiet cool here. January to April is the rainy season here.
March to October is the most pleasant time in the park.
Light clothing for summer and warm for winter, showld be carried. The area is prone to sudden weather changes
