Bontebok National Park


The Bontebok National Park is situated within the Cape flower Kingdom, the smallest, but richest of the world's 6 flower kingdoms and is a dwelling to the popular Bontebok from which its name is derived.

Set in a historical rich area with picturesque mountain views. It is a tranquil refuge for bird lovers and is the home of the previously endangered Bontebok

The Bontebok National Park is situated in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains, located in the province of Swellendam. The park was declared in 1931 to prevent the few remaining Bontebok from extinction.

The number of Bontebok has risen 17 to over 200, which is the maximum number this park can support without imposing serious damage to it's various plant habitat.

The Bontebok is 80 to 100 centimeters tall and weighs 50 to 90 kilograms. The Bontebok is chocolate brown colour, with a white underside and a white stripe from the forehead to the tip of the nose.

The horns of Bontebok are harp shaped and ringed they are found in both sexes and can reach a length of half a meter.

Bontebok lives in parks where they can eat short grasses. They are cyclic, though they rest during the heat of the day. Herds contain only males, females or are mixed and do not exceed forty animals for Bonteboks
