Cederberg Wilderness Area


The Cederberg Wilderness became a Nature Conservation area in 1973. The 71 000 hectare reserve stretches from the Middelberg Pass near Citrusdal to the Pakhuis Pass near Clanwilliam.

The 12 000 a Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve is situated on the eastern boundary of the Cederberg mountains. It is an integral component of the greater Cederberg conservation area. this rugged nature reserve includes the famous Stadsaal rock formations and some outstanding examples of San rock art.

The conservation area consists of a charming rugged mountain landscape with Fynbos flora and spectacular sandstone formations like the Maltese Cross or the Wolfberg Arch. The area is a delight for the mountaineer, hiker and nature enthusiasts.

the Algeria Forest Station under Cape Nature Conservation, 40 kms north of Citrusdal, is strongly recommended for campers. The shady land in tranquil forest surroundings makes an perfect base for hikes.

There are hundreds of rocky caves with fine examples of rock art. These paintings may be anything from 300 to 6 000 years old, and form an integral part of the geographic area's fascination.

Wilderness areas like the Cederberg takes people out of the pressures of modern life. The Cederberg is renowned for its dry mountain fynbos, San paintings, caves and bizarre rock formations such as the Maltese cross, Wolfberg Arch and Soldaatkop.

Babooons, dassies, grey rhebok, klipspringers, duiker and grysbok are found in Cederberg. Porcupine, honeybadger, Cape clawless otter and aardvark are also seen. The leopard is the Cederberg's largest. Smaller predators include African wildcat, lynx, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and Cape fox. The small grey mongoose and striped polecat are also seen.

Guides carry a wealth of information about the reserve, the region and its people. it has all kinds of survival camping in the wilderness or shady campsites located along the river. There are also two fully operational, furnished cottages and five more basic cottages relying on solar and gas power.

Winters in the Cederberg are cold and wet while summers are warm and dry. rain falls inMay and September and it snows in the higher parts. In winter, night temperatures drop sharply and heavy frost occur while in summer temperatures reach as high as 40°C. Lightning is cause of periodic veldt fires, aided by southeasterly winds that prevail in the summer and contribute to the fire risk.
