The Mkuze Game Reserve is situated on the boundary of the Ubombo Mountain Range and expands towards the coast on the lowlands of the Mkuze River with its flood plains at the southwestern region of the Mozambique Coastal Plain. It lies in a passage geographical zone considering its fauna and flora.
It is tropical forms in the north and temperate forms in the south.

Mkuze Game Reserve is among the top ten birding spots in Southern Africa. It has a list of over 450 species, a wide range of regions, and easy access to most areas. Lists of over 100 species are usual and over 200 for longer visits in summer
A rare type of sand forest also is in the reserve.
Two beautiful pans, Nhlonhlela and Nsumo , lie in the north and east respectively, home to communities of hippo, crocodile, pinkbacked and white pelicans, as well as a diversity of ducks and geese which gather in springtime. this 40 000 hectare reserve was announced a protected area in 1912.
Mkhuze Game Reserve constitutes the northwestern part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. The Mkhuze River has fig forest along its banks. Fish eagles plunge over the pans.
Mkuze Falls is one of only two Private Game Reserves in the region where you can view the 'lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant together. For bird lovers, nearly 400 species of birds are dwelling here.
