Tsitsikamma National Park


Tsitsikamma National Park is situated at the middle of the region known as the Garden Route, found in the Southern Cape of South Africa. Tsitsikamma is an early inhabitant of the area.

The Park has an 80 km rocky coastline with stunning sea and landscapes. It has a remote mountainous region with sheltered valleys covered in Fynbos and temperate high forests with river gorges leading down to the sea.

The Tsitsikamma's scenery includes the Indian Ocean, pulsation rocky shores, ever-green forests and fynbos meandering down to the sea where rivers have carved their trail to the ocean through rocky ravines.

All this attracts large numbers of international and local tourist to the Park. Tsitsikamma National Park is the third most frequently visited out of the twenty national parks in South Africa.

The Park conserves the natural living organismsof the Garden Route. The primary vegetation consist of Mountain Fynbos, Coastal Fynbos, Afromontane Forest and the Marine herbland-, inter-tidal-, and sub-tidal zones. The average annual rainfall here is 1200 mm.

Tsitsikamma National Park protects a wonderland of marine life. This is one of the largest Marine Protected Areas in the world, conserving 11 percent of South Africa's Temperate South Coast rocky shoreline and provides a region for fisheries baseline research on endangered line fish species.

Scattered amongst the forest vegetation, Tsitsikamma National Park has a wide variety of beautiful flowers, including proteas and heath. Many species of forest, fynbos and sea birds are present here.

Tsitsikamma National Park attracts tourists to the region, provides economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs like the local trail guides, adventure operators, transport services, infrastructure development & maintenance services, and as implementing agency for poverty relief program's, creates employment and training opportunities for some of the regions poverty stricken communities.

Snorkeling, scuba diving and canoeing are all activities that many people can and do take part in. The Tsitsikamma National Park has cultural heritage sites ranging from Khoisan cultural heritage sites such as caves, shell maddens and rock art to recent cultural historic sites.
