Camp Bay


Camps Bay is one of the most popular and most expensive suburbs in Cape Town. The reason is its stunning location at the foot a mountain range belonging to the Table Mountain range, and its proximity to the center of town.

The spacious sandy beach is also dotted with huge ancient boulders and rock formations, which date back millions of years .

This well known stretch of beach is a short distance from Clifton's beaches. It is known for its row of tall palm trees and a wide grassy area, with shady picnic spots.

Camps Bay is the place for urban beach life. The fine white sand is packed with people is on the weekends and the holidays. The sea is calm and good for swimming in summer. At the southern end, there is a seawater pool.

Camps Bay's beach promenade is lined with cafés, bistros, discotheques and restaurants. These are mostly specialized in Mediterranean or seafood and Sushi. Many people usually visit all of them in the evenings. Camps Bay is a very trendy and people come here to meet other people over a good meal or just for a glass of wine or a cappuccino.

Everything from restaurants to upmarket boutiques and beauty salons can be found in the complex. There are also secure parking bays in the basement. The 5 star Bay Hotel is within walking distance of the beach.

The beach population of neighboring Clifton also comes to Camps Bay for evening entertainment, because Clifton itself is too narrow for a public walk. It has the best beaches, lying in small rocky bays. Luxurious apartment houses hang on the mountain slopes. The real estate prices are the highest in South Africa. Even the smallest flat costs millions of Rands.

Camps Bay beach is usually very crowded in the tourist season and as there are insufficient allocated parking areas, parking is difficult to find along the road near the beach which is crowded with traffic.

Camps Bay is a well-known beach and water sport venue. Surfers can be seen riding their boards, and jet skis seen on the waves. Beach sports are popular and regular international volleyball events are organized.

There are two routes to Camps Bay from the city. The route along the coast via Seapoint and Bantry Bay is longer and the direct hilly road takes over Kloof Nek which runs between Table Mountain and Lion's head.
