Province Capital: Polokwane
Formerly known as Northern Province, Limpopo Province is named after the great river forming the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. Situated below Southern Zimbabwe and dissected by the famous "Great North Road".
Limpopo Province offers a wealth of wild life options as approximately half the Kruger National Park falls within its borders and the northern regions house what has become as the. "The Ivory Route." Great herds of elephant used to wander between Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa and the legendry game hunters who also roamed over here named it The Ivory Route.
Culturally Limpopo has a great richness of African art and offers a number of highly distinctive opportunities to interact with African communities. The Venda community who originate from here possess one of the greatest community traditions of art .The other community known as the Ndebele also possess the art and the women also have remarkable regalia consisting of heavy and intricate beaded anklet and bracelet and the beaded work is such a importance in traditional cultures.
Though it is less developed than other South African provinces, it has an immense appeal to adventure tourism.
Tourist Attractions in Limpopo Province
The Waterberg: This is a wild area approximately three to four hours drive from Johannesburg situated on a high lying plateau. A malaria free zone it has unique flora and wide variety of game. Famous for its walking and horse back safaris,it has accommodations to suit anyone from self catering camps to luxurious lodges. The nearest city to reach this place via Polokwane.
Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park: One of the largest wilderness areas of the world have combined to one by removing all fences allowing animals to return. The park is a home to the Big Five as well as 150 other species of mammals. Though the Southern part has more visitor facilities the northern part is more frequently visited by the adventure travelers.
Mapungubwe: Home to the majestic baobab trees this ancient city is rich in archaeological sites.
Modjaji the Rain Queen of the Lobedu people guards the sacred grove of the cycads. Deep in the forests of Venda a sacred lake holds unfathomable secrets. Young girls dance snake like to the beat of the sacred drums.
Venda: Dating back to the iron age this western section of the region is framed by rocky spine of awe inspiring Soutpansberg (Salt pan Mountain) range spanning over 30 km in width.
The area also boasts of historical sites from the Stone Age San and their rock art work. The tracks of the Voortrekker wagons that carried European migrants into an unknown land can also be seen here.
